WHEN TWILIGHT ARRIVED the next morning, Kerwin led his horse to the fork that led west in one direction and north to Mistress Nadia in the other. Kerwin dropped the reins and pulled his canteen from the saddle horn. He drank heavily, pausing only when Eric led the horse that bore the body of Corporal James past him. The two weary men-at-arms followed close behind the younger knight.

Kerwin watched his bedraggled, wet, and exhausted men will themselves along the return path to Elf Watch. He studied the south trail from whence they had come. Ominous storm clouds hugged the rugged mountains beyond. Lightning flashed beyond the distance of thunder to resound.

On the granite outcrop above him, a tumble of dead bushes dried to a faded gray. Someone had cut the bushes loose and stacked them for cover. Now a brisk wind had reshuffled the arrangement, and the dead, curled leaves confirmed them as camouflage. At the base of the outcrop, heavy footprints testified that whoever silently watched from the outcrop had jumped to the ground and then run up the western path.

“I was wrong,” Kerwin whispered to himself. “You did not go south.”

He scanned the pathway west as if that effort alone could reveal some clue. “Yes, that way hides the fox. Now I know you, Crius. I know your subtlety. I know your intent. 'Twas you who sent James to his death. Eric will report the southern threat to Sir Michael, but I will not turn aside.”

“I shall follow you, Crius.” Kerwin retrieved his horse’s reins. “For the sake of James, I vow to be your hound to hell.”
